JONES ASKS FOR STAMP UNVEILING AT LEJEUNE

JONES ASKS FOR STAMP UNVEILING AT LEJEUNE

“The Marines that you have chosen to memorialize are considered legends within the Marine Corps. Throughout our nation’s history the Marines have often been the first called into battle, and they have accepted this duty without hesitation and with a sense of honor and esprit de corps that is second to none.”

Washington, D.C. – In a letter to John Potter, Postmaster General and CEO of the United States Postal Service, Third District Representative Walter B. Jones thanked Mr. Potter for the Post Office’s tribute to the United States Marines Corps with its upcoming, commemorative stamp. The new postage stamp will feature several prominent Marines and will be unveiled in June of 2005.

Congressman Jones also asked that Camp Lejeune be considered for the unveiling of the stamp as recognition of all the Lejeune Marines who have served or are currently serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He noted that Lejeune’s II Marine Expeditionary Force in particular has played a large role in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the War on Terrorism.

“I ask that you consider Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC as a possible site to unveil these significant stamps,” Jones said in the letter. “Not only would this ceremony provide a boost in morale to those who may soon be deploying, but it would also honor those who have returned from fighting. I believe this could be an excellent opportunity to honor those who have paid the ultimate price in defense of freedom.”

The stamps will honor Distinguished Marines John A. Lejeune, John Basilone, Daniel J. Daly, and Lewis B. Puller.
