Gen. Peter Pace, USMC Speaks
Gen. Peter Pace Speaks
National Review Online
[W. Thomas Smith Jr.]
Last night, during a Q&A following remarks by Gen. Peter Pace at The Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, the general was asked the following question:
General Pace responds:
"He went out and did exactly what he said on television, and exactly what he’s been saying in his interviews, which is he went out and pulsed various members of Congress and he heard back from them the things that he said that he heard.
He and I sat down, and I said “I’m a Marine…If you want me to go forward with the confirmation process, I’m all for it.
”I also told him that what he needed to do, in my opinion, was what was best for the institution, and whatever he and the president decided was going to be best for the institution was what Pete Pace was going to do. Oh and by the way, I can read the Constitution, which says the president gets to nominate and the Senate gets to confirm, or not, and neither one of those two things is going to happen, therefore I’m not staying.
One thing that was discussed was whether or not I should just voluntarily retire and take the issue off the table. I said I could not do that for one very fundamental reason and that is that PFC Pace in Baghdad should not think – ever – that his chairman, whoever that person is, could have stayed in the battle and voluntarily walked off the battlefield. That is unacceptable as a leadership thing in my mind.
So I elected not to submit my request for retirement until after it was publicly known that I was no longer going to be renominated.
That is very important to me. The other part that is important to me is personal. The first piece holds true for anybody in this position – anybody.
The other piece for me personally was that some 40 years ago I left some guys on the battlefield in Vietnam who lost their lives following 2nd Lt. Pace. And I promised myself then that I will serve this country until I was no longer needed — that it’s not my decision. I need to be told that I’m done.
I’ve been told I’m done.
I will run through the finish line on 1 October, and when I run through the finish line I will have met the mission I set for myself.

An open letter to America
It is abundantly clear that our President and our elected representatives in Washington, D.C. do not give a tinker's damn what we, the American people want. Our President has even gone so far to say that those of us who oppose the "Immigration Reform Bill" are using "Red Neck" fear tactics to defeat this bill. Yet in the same breath he states that if this bill is not passed, there will be massive riots in our streets. Excuse me, but doesn't that statement qualify as a "SCARE TACTIC?"
We have also been told that it would be impossible to round up all the illegal immigrants and deport them back to Mexico.
Well, I think we should vote this bill down, then let these people riot in our streets. This will solve the "impossible" task of rounding them up. Once they are all in one place at the same time for their riot, all you have to do is corner them, put them on buses and take them back across the border. While we're processing these "DETAINEE'S" we can cross reference their names with the "Welfare roles. If we find their names there, simply "STOP" payment of funds. Now we have solved two problems; too many illegal's and too many of OUR tax dollars going to support them.
The sooner word spreads that the American people will no longer tolerate being invaded by the citizens of another nation. That we, the American people, WILL use what ever force is necessary to protect our sovereignty, the sooner the tide of illegal immigrants will begin to reverse itself.
Further, if I were the Governor of one of the states that borders with Mexico, I would order my National Guard Commander to deploy his troops along that border. I would further authorize the use of deadly force to ensure the security my states section of the border the United States of America.
If it became necessary, I would avail myself of my authority as Governor to deputize and arm citizens of my state to augment the National Guard troops along the border.
Should the EMPEROR and his COURT, oh excuse me, I meant to say the President and Congress, of the United States try to stop my "Legally Mandated" duty to protect and defend the citizens of my state , My reply to him would be the same one HE is giving to the American people.
TOUGH BANANAS, I'M IN CHARGE AND I'LL DAMN WELL DO AS I PLEASE!

October 1, 1972 Off the Coast of Vietnam (Re-visited)

David Plum, a shipmate has written several poems in memory of those lost on that night. Here are a few of them.
-------------------------------------------------------
SN Jack Stephen Bergman Jr.
You stood by your bunk
In that good photograph
Long hair, class ring on right finger
You got along, stayed up nights
Fighting a nutty war
In this short-manned life
White tee-shirt, clear eyes
You slammed the shells
Cleared the breach
Sixty rounds a minute
Before the first
One hit the ground
Brother to us all
The world is small
David Plumb

--------------------------------------------------------
WILLIAM CLARK JR
Man of softness and grace
Vienna to Haiphong
You shot basketball
Left grass roots America
Made the grade
Smiled for the photographs
Three years on board
A handshake, the medals
Your family strong
Hostile sea causality they say
You gave. You smiled
Wife Selma left behind
Oh Tommy Wayne
Your Dad was good
Mr. and Mrs. William Clark
And Annie May
Left in your song
William Clark Jr.
We go on.
David Plumb
---------------------------------------------------------
Charles Wayne Clinard
Eyes stern but young he looks
Straight on the camera
Squared away
On his way home
seven months to go
He’ll dig ditches
To keep his grandmother well
Take his savings
He’ll be home soon
Third Class Gunner’s Mate Clinard
Maysfield, Texas
In charge of guns
One of twelve
Twenty one
Single
Coming home
Phone rings
Bells rung
Medals pinned
Wall named
He’ll be home
soon
--------------------------------------------------------
SA Herman Carol Acker-Killed aboard the U.S.S. Newport News in Vietnam
Framed in uniform and flag
You stare into the camera
New Orleans close behind
Fresh out of high school
Your mother said
Due home on leave in just a few
A blink, a cut, a flaw in the gun
You stood. You did. You died.
We’re not sure why
It hurts. We walk.
Goodbye.
