July 29, 2010

Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Pellegrin has retired from the Air National Guard, a Reserve Component of the U.S. Air Force, after 37 years of faithful and honorable military service to the nation.

Prior to retiring, Pellegrin served as the enlisted superintendent for the 150th Medical Group based in Carville, La., as a member of the Louisiana Air National Guard.

He is the son of Preston and Evelyn Pellegrin of Louisiana St., Bay St. Louis, Miss.; and the husband of Frances Pellegrin, and the brother-in-law of Tom Best of Portsmouth Drive, Slidell, La.

Pellegrin is the father of Chuck and Susan Schroeder of Meadow Drive, D'iberville, Miss.; and Paul and Sarah Schoreder of S. Forest St., Long Beach, Miss.; and Chris and Beverly Fields of Amoka Drive, Diamondhead, Miss. His sons and families are Master Sgt. John and Mrs. Kim Fields of Bourdelais Drive, Swansea, Ill.; and Jason and Tami Pellegrin of Diley Road N., Pickerington, Ohio.

His brother and family is Lynn and Debbie Pellegrin of Mu St., Belle Chase, La.; his sisters and families are Debra and Mark Scaraino of Schaumbaker Road, Gulfport, Miss., and Penny and Scott Chauvin of Hilo Way, Diamondhead.

Pellegrin graduated in 1971 from West Jefferson High School, Harvey, La., and received an associate degree in 1985 from Delgado Community College, New Orleans, La.

The chief and his wife reside in Diamondhead, and they have five sons and eight grandchildren.

Chief Pellegrin enlisted in the Louisiana Air National Guard in August 1972 and received training in aircraft weapons maintenance, weapon systems, and aircraft armament systems. In September 1992, he was reassigned to the 159th Tactical Clinic, 159th to be the supervisor of the Bioenvironmental Engineering Services section, and thus began his new career field in bioenvironmental engineering. His subsequently duty assignments in the National Guard included serving in various positions of responsibility and authority. He served as senior member of the medical staff for the 159th Medical Group, sat on several management committees and was responsible for advising and assisting the Chief of Aerospace Medicine and the Medical Group commander on all affairs concerning the Occupational Health Program for the Louisiana Air National Guard.

He performed duties of radiation protection officer; chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives medical defense supervisor; bioenvironmental engineering superintendent; and aerospace medicine enlisted superintendent. Due to his unique qualifications in the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive field, he has appointed to be the Public Health Emergency Officer for the 159th Fighter Wing.

When promoted to chief master sergeant in June 2008, he became the first highest enlisted rank in the Air Force to be assigned to the 159th Medical Group and the only-ever chief master sergeant in the Air National Guard serving in the bioenvironmental engineering field.

Additional duty assignments while assigned to the 159th Medical Group included serving as acting First Sergeant, awards monitor, computer security manager, and the initial incident response unit supervisor. He supported unit and wing missions by deploying three times to Iceland, two medical tours of duty to Honduras, Central America, and countless other tours of duty throughout the U.S.
